Tile holds the chill overnight and releases it slowly during the day. By the time the outdoor temperature has climbed to 21°C, your floors are still at 15°C. The aircon can heat the air. The floor is doing the opposite — pulling warmth out of the room every time you walk across it.
The shaded hinterland home
Beechmont, Tamborine, Canungra, Witheren. Big block, established trees, north or east-facing living areas that catch beautiful morning light — but sit in cool shadow by mid-afternoon.
The forecast says 21°C. Your east-facing living room saw two hours of sun at breakfast, then went cold by 11am. By 3pm, the room is 4-5 degrees cooler than the temperature outside. Your aircon is working harder than the forecast suggests it should need to.
The high-ceiling premium home
Hope Island, Sanctuary Cove, Runaway Bay. Voluminous open-plan living, high ceilings, big windows. Stunning in every season except this one.
Heat rises. In a room with a 4-metre ceiling, most of the warmth your reverse cycle system produces sits above head height where nobody uses it. The temperature at floor level might be 4 degrees cooler than the thermostat is reading.

The scenarios above are architectural, not mechanical. If you’ve adjusted for them — closed off unused rooms, given the system time to warm the space, run heat mode at 19-20°C for at least 30 minutes — and the home still won’t warm up, that’s a different conversation.
Signs it’s your aircon, not your house:
- The system runs for over 45 minutes without meaningfully changing the room temperature
- The unit blows lukewarm or cool air on heat mode
- One zone in a ducted system stays cold while others warm up
- The system only feels comfortable when set to 24°C or higher
