Split System Servicing: How Often Does Your Home Really Need It?
Split system servicing probably isn’t something you think about while your air conditioner is quietly doing its job.
You switch it on, get comfortable and carry on with your day.
Then a reminder arrives, or you notice it smells a little different, and you wonder: “Is it due already?”
It’s a fair question. The best answer starts with how you use it.
Your bedroom and spare room might need different schedules
Think about the air conditioner in your bedroom. Perhaps it runs every night so everyone sleeps comfortably.
Now think about the one in the spare room. It might only get switched on when family comes to stay.
Same house. Very different workloads.
That’s why split system servicing should take your household into account. How long the unit runs, where it sits, pets, dust and the manufacturer’s instructions all help shape the recommendation.
An annual visit may suit one system. Another may need attention every six months. Some heavily used systems may benefit from quarterly visits.
Those visits won’t necessarily involve the same work each time. The recommendation should explain what’s needed and why.
“It still works” is useful but it isn’t the whole picture
We understand why servicing can slip down the list when the room still gets cool.
But a working air conditioner can still have dirty filters, a drain that needs attention or signs of wear worth watching.
You don’t need to assume something is wrong. A service is an opportunity to check, clean what needs cleaning and understand how the system is holding up.
Sometimes the most useful advice is simply: “This looks okay for now. We’ll check it again next time.”
Filters need their own little routine
Professional split system servicing and cleaning your filters are different jobs.
The filters catch dust as air passes through the indoor unit. They may need attention well before your next service appointment.
For example, Daikin’s filter-cleaning guidance recommends cleaning every two weeks as a general rule, more often in dusty conditions. Follow the instructions for your own model.
If you’re unsure which filters you can safely clean, ask us during the visit. We can show you what to look after between services.
Ask us why we recommend that timing
You shouldn’t be left guessing whether “see you in six months” is a general reminder or advice for your system.
A helpful recommendation might sound like:
“This bedroom unit runs every night, and we found quite a bit of build-up. Let’s check it again in six months and see how it’s tracking.”
That gives you a reason and a plan.
Your service report should record the findings, anything to monitor and the recommended timing. At the next visit, there’s something to compare.
When should you bring the visit forward?
If your air conditioner starts leaking, develops an unusual smell or noise, or isn’t cooling as it normally does, get in touch rather than waiting for the reminder.
Tell us what has changed. It may need cleaning, or it may need a fault checked before a clean is arranged.
A couple of questions we often hear
Does a rarely used split system still need servicing?
Yes. Light use doesn’t remove the need for maintenance. Its condition and the manufacturer’s guidance still matter, even if it only runs occasionally.
Should every unit in my house be serviced together?
It can be convenient, but each unit should be assessed individually. They may need different amounts of cleaning or different follow-up intervals.
