Air Conditioning Installation: 5 Smart Installer Questions

Air conditioning installation usually starts with two questions: “What brand do you recommend?” and “When can you do it?”

Both matter. But neither tells you who will stand behind the work once the van leaves.

If you’re choosing an air conditioning installer on the Gold Coast, ask about their qualifications, how they’ll test the installation, what their workmanship warranty covers and who you’ll contact afterwards. Get those answers in writing before you book.

It’s called a flare. It forms part of the seal that keeps refrigerant inside the pipes connecting the indoor and outdoor units. If that seal fails, refrigerant can escape and cooling can suffer.

It’s something most homeowners would never see on installation day.

You might recognise the brand on the wall. You probably won’t know whether the connections were prepared carefully and tested properly.

You shouldn’t have to. That’s the installer’s job.

Your part is choosing a team that can explain its work and take responsibility for it.

Five questions to ask before air conditioning installation

1. Who will actually install my system?

Ask about the qualifications and experience of the people doing the work, including any subcontractors.

“What refrigeration training do you have?” and “Do you also diagnose and repair these systems?” are useful questions.

You can check refrigerant handling licences and business authorisations through the Australian Refrigeration Council’s Look for the Tick website. Ask which licences apply to your job, including its electrical work.

2. How will you check the installation before leaving?

Ask how the team will check the pipe connections for leaks and test the system’s operation.

You don’t need a technical lesson. You need an explanation you understand.

Turning the air conditioner on and feeling cool air is only part of the handover. Ask what checks will be completed and what record you’ll receive.

3. What does your workmanship warranty cover?

Ask for the workmanship warranty in writing, including its duration, conditions and how to request help.

An equipment warranty and an installer’s workmanship warranty cover different things. Don’t assume that choosing a familiar brand answers every question about installation faults.

4. Who do I contact if something goes wrong?

Ask for a clear point of contact and how a fault will be assessed.

Will the installer investigate? Can they assist with a manufacturer’s warranty claim? What happens if the issue turns out to involve the installation?

Knowing the process beforehand means less uncertainty if your air conditioning stops working later.

5. What will you show me during the handover?

Ask to be shown the controls, where the filters are, how to look after them safely and when to arrange servicing.

At an Upper Coomera home, we attended a ducted system with blocked filters. The owners hadn’t known the filters were there or that they needed attention between services.

That’s why air conditioning installation should finish with a conversation. You should feel comfortable using and looking after what you’ve bought.
