Air Conditioning Installation Gold Coast: 1 Risk to Know
Planning air conditioning installation on the Gold Coast? Salt exposure is one risk worth discussing before you book. This waterfront Runaway Bay system was only three years old when we found extensive corrosion—and the homeowner hadn’t been told how to protect it.
Three years old, with damage the owner wasn’t expecting
This outdoor unit was at a waterfront home in Runaway Bay. It was only three years old.
The photograph shows substantial corrosion around the coil, pipework and base.
The homeowner told us they hadn’t been warned about the exposure or given a plan for protecting the system. In this case, the corrosion damage wasn’t covered by the manufacturer or installer.
They had a relatively young air conditioner and a problem they hadn’t known to prepare for.
That’s why we believe the surroundings deserve as much attention as the brand and system size.
What should coastal air conditioning installation include?
It should include a discussion about where the outdoor unit will sit, how exposed it will be and what protection and maintenance are suitable.
A sheltered position and a spot facing salt-laden wind aren’t the same. Your installer needs to consider airflow, access for servicing and exposure together.
Some equipment already has factory-applied corrosion protection. Ask what it protects and whether additional treatment is appropriate for your particular system.
The useful question is: “What are you recommending for this home, and why?”
Discuss corrosion coating before installation
For exposed waterfront homes, discuss suitable anti-corrosion treatment before the unit is installed.
Action Corrosion offers specialist air conditioning coating services. Your installer should confirm that the proposed treatment suits the equipment and explain any maintenance or warranty conditions attached to it.
Coating is an extra layer of protection. It doesn’t make an air conditioner immune to its surroundings or remove the need for servicing.
Planning it as part of your air conditioning installation means you can understand the options before everything is connected and running.
Get a care plan you can actually follow
“Keep it maintained” isn’t much help if nobody explains what that means.
Ask your installer to show you what you can safely look after and what needs a technician.
For some exposed homes, that may include a gentle fresh-water rinse every two to three months, alongside professional servicing. The right method and frequency depend on the manufacturer’s instructions, the coating and how much salt exposure the unit gets.
Have your technician explain safe isolation and which areas can be rinsed. Don’t remove covers or use a pressure washer for routine home care. If access is difficult, leave the work to your service team.

Ask what the warranty covers
Ask specifically about corrosion and environmental damage, and request the written terms.
The outcome at this Runaway Bay property should not be assumed to apply to every system or claim. Equipment warranties, workmanship cover and coating warranties have their own conditions.
Have that conversation before installation, while you still have time to consider the options.
Ask about your home before you choose your system
A good air conditioning installation starts with understanding where you live and how you’ll look after the equipment.
At TemperCool, we want Gold Coast homeowners to understand those decisions before installation day.
Before you book, use our Homeowner’s Checklist to guide the conversation. For a coastal home, add one essential question: “What protection will my air conditioner need where I live?”
Before your air conditioning installation, ask for the recommended care routine in writing. What can you safely do yourself? What needs a technician? When should the protective coating be checked? Having those answers from the start gives you something useful to follow, rather than trying to work it out after damage appears.
