Ducted Air Conditioning Not Cooling? 3 Essential Checks

Ducted air conditioning not cooling every room properly can be frustrating. The controller is on, you can hear the system running, but the lounge feels comfortable while the bedroom stays warm.

Turning the temperature down again doesn’t tell you what is wrong.

The useful question is: where is the cooling being lost, restricted or not delivered?

Your ducted system includes the equipment, ductwork, zones and outlets that work together to keep your home comfortable. A problem in one part can affect what you feel in another.

Here are three observations worth making before booking an assessment, and why they help us investigate.

1. Ducted air conditioning not cooling one room?

Start by noticing which rooms are affected. Has one bedroom stopped cooling, or is the whole upstairs area warmer than it used to be?

Check that the intended zone is selected on your controller. If you have individual room settings, check those too.

A room that previously cooled well but now receives very little air gives us a different starting point from a room that has always struggled on hot afternoons.

Possible causes include a zone damper that is not opening properly, damaged ductwork or an airflow imbalance. The room’s heat load and the original system design may also need consideration.

Ducted air conditioning not cooling one room can have several causes. The controller settings give us a starting point, but checking the zone operation and ductwork helps establish what is actually happening.

Tell your technician what has changed, which rooms are affected and whether the problem happens consistently. That information is much more useful than simply saying the system feels weak.

2. Is airflow weak across several rooms?

With ducted air conditioning not cooling several rooms, pay attention to the airflow as well as the temperature.

Does air still come from the outlets with its usual strength? Or does the whole system feel quieter and weaker?

A restricted return-air filter, an indoor fan issue or problems in the ductwork can affect airflow. Cleaning an accessible filter may be part of the answer, but it does not establish that everything else is working correctly.

Only inspect or clean a filter you can safely access, with the system switched off and following its instructions. Leave roof-space inspections, equipment covers and ductwork to a qualified technician.

What we found in Upper Coomera

At one Upper Coomera home, the air conditioning equipment had been replaced, but the existing ductwork had been retained.

When we inspected it, sections were deteriorating, damaged by vermin and crushed.

The homeowner had new equipment connected to an old air-distribution system that was causing problems. The new unit could not overcome the condition of the ductwork carrying air around the home.

That is why we look beyond the outdoor unit.

Existing ducts do not automatically need replacing whenever new equipment goes in. However, their condition, sizing and suitability need checking before they are reused.

If you are comparing replacement quotes, our homeowner’s checklist helps you ask what is being inspected, retained and replaced.

3. Is air coming through normally, but the rooms stay warm?

Sometimes airflow feels normal, yet the house does not reach a comfortable temperature.

First, check that the controller is set to cooling rather than fan-only mode. Check the selected temperature and whether you are operating the zones as explained during your handover.

Some ducted systems are designed around particular combinations of zones. Turning everything on together may ask more of the system than it was designed to deliver.

Fujitsu’s explanation of day and night zones makes an important distinction: air coming through an outlet does not necessarily mean there is enough cooling capacity for all the areas being used.

That does not mean you should start closing every zone. Your system still needs its required airflow, so follow the operating guidance for your installation.

If your usual settings previously worked well and now do not, arrange an assessment. Refrigerant issues, controls, sensors and other equipment faults may need investigation.

Ducted air conditioning not cooling: what should you tell us?

Before you call, make a note of:

  • Whether the problem affects one room, one zone or the whole home.
  • Whether airflow feels weaker than usual.
  • Any fault code shown on the controller.
  • When the problem started, including any recent installation or repair.
  • Any visible water, ice or unusual noise.

You do not need to work out the fault yourself. These details help us understand the problem and plan the visit.

If you notice ice forming during cooling or water leaking into your home, switch the system off and arrange an assessment.

Get the whole system checked

A ducted air conditioning not cooling complaint needs an investigation that follows the symptoms through the system.

For the Upper Coomera homeowner, inspecting the ductwork revealed problems that looking at the new equipment alone would have missed.

Our ducted air conditioning repairs on the Gold Coast focus on identifying the cause and explaining what needs attention. If a larger repair is proposed, our guide to understanding ducted repair options explains the questions worth asking.
