How Old Is My Air Conditioner? Here’s How to Find Out and Why It Matters

How old is my air conditioner? It’s one of the most common questions we get and the one most homeowners can’t answer.

You bought the house. The air con came with it. Or you’ve lived there ten years and never thought about it. Either way, you probably don’t know how old your system is.

Most homeowners don’t. And it’s the one number that changes everything else about it, whether your warranty still covers a repair, when you should start budgeting for a replacement, and whether the system’s quietly on borrowed time or has years left in it.

It takes two minutes to check. The date is on a small silver badge. Here’s how to find it.

1. Start at the Outdoor Unit

This is where the answer almost always is.

Walk around the outside of your home and find the condenser, the boxy unit mounted on a wall or sitting on a concrete pad. There’s a metallic compliance badge on the side, back, or sometimes the top. It carries the brand, model number, serial number and — on most brands — the manufacture date.

For Panasonic, Haier, and Gree, the date is printed exactly like this:

Manufacturer Date: 05.2025

May 2025. Your warranty started then. Simple.

For Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the date is something you can’t get from the badge direct. Your next step? Photograph the badge, send it to us, and we’ll decode it for you.

Tip: if you can’t find the badge or it’s weathered off, the unit has likely been outside for 8+ years in coastal air. That alone tells you something.

2. Check the Indoor Unit

If you can’t find your outdoor, then your indoor unit may help.

On a split system, look on either side of the indoor unit. The badge should live on one side. On ducted systems, the indoor unit sits inside your ceiling so this is not something you can easily get.

3. Your Conveyancing Pack (If You Recently Bought the Home)

Easiest source for new homeowners.

When air conditioning is installed in Australia, the licensed installer issues their receipt and warranty documentation. That paperwork should be in the conveyancing pack you got at settlement.

The date on the certificate is the install date which is usually within a few months of the manufacture date. Close enough for warranty and planning purposes.

What Your Warranty Actually Covers — and for How Long

Here’s the table most people wish they had before something went wrong.

Brand Warranty
Daikin 5 years
Mitsubishi Electric 5 years
Fujitsu 5 years
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHIAA) 5 years
Panasonic 5 years
Haier 5 years
Gree 6 years
Hisense 7 years
Kaden 7 years
Samsung 5 years
LG 5 years
Kelvinator 5 years

An important thing worth knowing about this table.

Workmanship is separate. Manufacturer warranties cover the indoor and outdoor unit only. They do not cover the installation – that is the labour or materials used. A leaking flare, a drain that wasn’t sealed properly, a cable that was undersized — that’s the installer’s responsibility, not Daikin’s or Fujitsu’s. (We back our workmanship for life. Every install, every repair. Ask any other installer for the same in writing.)

You’re also covered by more than just the manufacturer. On top of the warranty above, every air conditioner sold in Australia comes with protections under Australian Consumer Law — covering things like systems that fail earlier than they reasonably should, or repairs that don’t fix the problem. It runs alongside your manufacturer warranty, not instead of it. The ACCC’s guide for electrical goods explains it in plain English if you want the detail.

How Old Is My Air Conditioner? What Each Stage Means

Under 5 years. Still in warranty. Service it annually – all  manufacturers require it to keep the warranty valid. No big decisions to make.

5 to 7 years. Warranty has likely expired (or is about to, depending on the brand). The system is past its honeymoon and small issues start showing.

8 to 10 years. This is when coastal Gold Coast systems start showing real wear. Salt corrosion on the outdoor unit, refrigerant slowly losing efficiency, electrical components fatiguing. Still serviceable but you should know where you are on the curve.

10+ years. Working on borrowed time. The question isn’t whether you replace it. It’s whether you do it in winter on your timeline, or in January at peak-season prices, when the unit decides for you.

A Two-Minute Job Worth Doing This Weekend

Walk outside. Find the badge. Take a photo.

You’ll know your warranty status, your replacement timeline, and whether the system you inherited is the bargain you thought it was or the time-bomb the home inspection missed.

If the badge is unreadable or the serial number doesn’t make sense — send us the photo. We’ll work it out from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my warranty start from the install date or the manufacture date?

Manufacture date – unless you have a proof of installation from the original installer.  If you don’t know, assume manufacture date and you’ll usually be right. The date on the outdoor unit badge is the reference.

Can I claim warranty if I’ve lost the original receipt?

Usually, yes. The manufacturer’s compliance badge on the unit itself is the primary reference. Lost paperwork is rarely the issue people think it is.

How long do air conditioners last on the Gold Coast?

Quality systems last 10 to 15 years. Homes close to the broadwater, canals, or the beach sit at the lower end – 8 to 10 years – because salt corrodes the outdoor unit faster than inland air does. Annual servicing and regular hose downs extend the life either way.

My system has no visible badge — what now?

The badge has weathered off, which usually means the system has been outside for 8+ years in coastal air. Send us a photo of the outdoor unit and the model number from inside (if it’s still readable). We can almost always identify the age from physical features and installation records.
